Designing your own socks isn't just fun, it’s a chance to tell a story through your feet. At MAZE, we turn your wildest, weirdest, or most meaningful ideas into something you can actually wear. Whether you’re creating for a brand, a gift, or just for yourself, here’s how to make sure your sock design looks as good in real life as it does in your head.

Step 1: Know the Medium

Sock designs aren’t printed on flat paper. They're either knitted into the sock.
That means:

  • Patterns get stitched, not drawn.

  • Colours show up differently depending on yarn.

  • Small details may be lost if they’re too fine.

You’re designing for fabric that stretches, curves, and moves. Think about how your artwork will look when it wraps around an ankle or bends at the heel.

Step 2: Understand the Template

The MAZE sock template shows 4 angles of the sock:

  • Front

  • Back

  • Side

  • Flat

Designs must be clear in all these views, especially if you're placing elements like logos or text. The printable area varies slightly depending on the style — ankle, crew, or calf-length — but we’ll guide you through it.

Pixel guide for knitted socks:

  • Width: 168 pixels

  • Height: 350–370 pixels depending on sock length

Step 3: Do's and Don'ts of Sock Design

Do:

  • Keep it bold: Strong shapes and high contrast work best.

  • Use 5 colours max: That’s the sweet spot for knitted socks.

  • Place logos wisely: Go for the cuff, outer calf, or ankle.

  • Think local: A mango motif or tuk tuk wheel can be iconic without being obvious.

  • Test visibility: Zoom out on your design — if it disappears, simplify.

Don’t:

  • Use tiny text: It gets lost or distorted when stretched.

  • Add gradients: These don’t knit well and end up looking patchy.

  • Expect exact colours: Yarn dyeing doesn’t always match screen tones.

  • Forget symmetry: Your design wraps around a 3D object — avoid having the left side clash with the right.

  • Ignore the heel and toe: These areas are often pre-coloured — work with them, not against them.

Step 4: Submit and Watch It Come to Life

Once your artwork is ready, send it to the MAZE team. We’ll double-check the alignment, colour matching, and production feasibility — then it's off to the looms. Every pair is made to be worn, loved, and noticed. Use this as a guideline.
