How To Style Your Socks
We agree, reading about socks is not the most interesting thing, but you don’t want to get such a simple element of your wardrobe wrong. So, spare us a few minutes, and we will be happy to share some advice that can truly help increase your socks game.
Have a bunch of colourful, patterned or novelty socks in your drawer? Are you wearing them appropriately? Not sure? Luckily our self-proclaimed style guru is here to help!
If you are unsure (by unsure we mean scared – bluck bluck bluck) about styling your socks, our advice is to stick to the old (outdated) rule – match your socks to your pants. You can go a shade darker or lighter, but don’t try to experiment with colours if you are not confident (*cough* chicken!) about it. It will only make you feel uncomfortable and self-conscious, or worse make you look like a fashion noob.
Patterns – these are pretty easy to style, and shouldn’t cause too much stress. If your go-to look is jeans and a t-shirt, a pair of bold patterned socks can truly up your style game. Colourful patterned socks can also work well for more semi-formal occasions that require you to wear a suit. Try to coordinate them to the rest of your outfit by selecting complementary colours. Classic patterns such as argyle, polka dot, stripes can be paired with smart brogues, lace-ups or loafers. Just ensure that your socks and shoes coordinate.
Colours – bright coloured statement socks have made a comeback in recent years, with men feeling more confident about sporting vibrant red, yellow and even pink socks! One thing you need to keep in mind when choosing brightly coloured socks is that they don’t draw all the attention. It’s true that you want people to see them, but you also don’t want to look like a clown. Make sure that the colours you select either compliment or properly contrast your outfit. Put some thought into it before you make your decision and wear the colours with confidence. Avoid wearing bright colours for important work meetings, job interviews, funerals or formal black-tie events.
Length – pay attention to the length of the socks you wear with different outfits. Ankle length, peds or no-show socks should be worn with trainers or loafers in more casual settings with jeans, chinos or shorts. Mid-calf or crew socks should always be worn with longs, and even with jeans for more formal settings.
Now that we’ve equipped you with the basics, happy styling!
